How to review your own writing answer

Admin1 November 2026 1 min read

Reviewing in layers catches more errors than one quick read.

A first draft is for ideas. The review is where the band goes up.

Read in four passes

  1. Meaning: Did I answer the question and cover every part?
  2. Structure: Does each paragraph have one idea, with support?
  3. Language: Are verbs, articles and plurals correct?
  4. Polish: Spelling, punctuation and repeated words.

Use the criteria

Score yourself against the four criteria. For each, write one sentence of evidence from your answer.

Compare with a model

Read a model answer after you have written yours. Note two ideas or phrases to try next time.

Keep a record

After each essay, add your most frequent error to a short list. Review that list before your next writing session.

  • Four passes done
  • Each criterion scored with evidence
  • Top error added to my list

Get a second opinion

AI feedback or a teacher's comments often find what you cannot see yourself. Compare their points with your own review.
