Speaking Part 2 without panic

Admin1 November 2026 1 min read

Part 2 is the part most learners fear: one minute to prepare, then up to two minutes alone. A routine removes the panic.

The examiner is not testing whether the story is interesting. They are listening to how you speak.

The preparation minute

Write five keywords, not sentences. Use the cue-card prompts as your structure.

While you speak

  1. Start with a clear opening: I'd like to talk about...
  2. Move through the prompts in order.
  3. If you cannot find a word, describe it in simpler words and move on.
  4. Use the last 30 seconds for feelings and reasons.

If you finish early

The examiner may ask a follow-up question. That is not a bad sign. Add a detail you did not use, such as a feeling, a comparison or a small story.

Timing guide

TimeWhat you are doing
0:00 to 0:20Introduce the topic
0:20 to 1:20Cover the three prompts
1:20 to 2:00Explain why, with a feeling and an example
