What a band 8.0 answer sounds like
Do you think people read less than they used to?
In terms of books, probably yes, although I'd say we read more words than ever, because we're constantly reading messages and articles on our phones. The difference is that this reading is fragmented, so it doesn't build the same sustained concentration as a novel does.
Why do some people prefer paper books to e-books?
I think it's partly habit and partly sensory. Many readers like the feel of the paper and being able to see how far through they are. There's also the point that screens can be tiring and full of distractions, whereas a book does one thing only, which makes it easier to get absorbed.
Should schools encourage children to read more for pleasure?
Definitely. Children who read for enjoyment tend to have a wider vocabulary and do better across subjects, not just in language lessons. That said, I think the key is choice. If schools force particular titles, children may associate reading with homework, whereas letting them pick books they like is more likely to build a lasting habit.
