From band 6 to band 7: what actually changes
Admin1 November 2026 1 min read
Band 7 is not just "better English". It is a different set of habits.
Writing
At band 6, ideas are present but thinly explained. At band 7, each idea is extended with a reason and an example, and your position is clear from start to finish.
Speaking
At band 6 you can speak at length but you hesitate to search for words. At band 7 you speak with ease and use less common vocabulary appropriately.
What changes, side by side
| Band 6 | Band 7 | |
|---|---|---|
| Ideas | Stated | Extended with reason and example |
| Position | Sometimes unclear | Clear throughout |
| Sentences | Some complex ones, with errors | A range, mostly accurate |
| Vocabulary | Adequate | Flexible, some less common words |
| Speaking | Hesitates to find words | Fluent, self-corrects |
Reading and Listening
Most of the extra marks come from careful reading of True/False/Not Given and from not losing marks to spelling and word limits.
What to do
- Rewrite one old essay with every idea fully supported.
- Record Part 2 answers and look for words you repeat.
- Track each wrong answer by cause.
