A 12-week IELTS study plan you can adapt to your own life
Admin1 November 2026 2 min read
Twelve weeks is enough to raise a band by about half to one point if you practise regularly and review your mistakes. Here is a plan in three phases. Change the hours to fit your life, not the other way round.
The three phases
| Weeks | Phase | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | Foundations | Learn the format, find your weak points, fix basic errors |
| 5 to 8 | Skills | Practise each question type and the timing |
| 9 to 12 | Exam mode | Full timed tests and focused repair |
Phase 1: foundations (weeks 1 to 4)
- Take a placement test or one mock to get a starting band.
- Read the band descriptors for Writing and Speaking.
- Start a mistake log and a vocabulary notebook.
- Learn the format of every task: how many questions, how long, what is scored.
Phase 2: skills (weeks 5 to 8)
Work one question type at a time. Spend about two thirds of your time on your weakest skill.
Phase 3: exam mode (weeks 9 to 12)
- One full timed mock a week, with a proper review.
- Rewrite your weakest essay from earlier weeks.
- Record Part 2 answers on random topics.
- In the last week, reduce volume and rest.
A sample week at 6 hours
| Day | Session |
|---|---|
| Mon | Weakest skill, 60 min |
| Tue | Listening, 45 min |
| Wed | Writing task and self-review, 60 min |
| Thu | Speaking recording, 45 min |
| Fri | Reading, 45 min |
| Sat | Timed section or mock, 90 min |
| Sun | Rest, or 15 minutes of vocabulary review |
Adjust the plan
- Fewer hours? Keep the rhythm, extend the plan to 16 or 20 weeks.
- Exam in six weeks? Compress phases 1 and 2 into two weeks each.
- One very weak skill? Give it a third of all your time from week one.
Check yourself every Sunday
- Did I finish the week's sessions?
- Did I review every mistake?
- Is my weakest skill still the same?
- What one thing will I change next week?
