Band 7.5 answer
The table shows how the proportion of workers using five modes of transport to reach their jobs in one city changed between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, car use fell substantially, although it remained the most popular option, while train and bicycle commuting both grew markedly. Walking was the only category that did not change.
In 2000, almost two-thirds of workers (62%) drove to work, and no other method accounted for more than 18%. By 2020, however, the car's share had dropped to 44%, a fall of 18 percentage points.
Public transport and cycling gained most of this lost ground. The proportion of people travelling by train nearly doubled, from 9% to 17%, and bus use rose slightly from 18% to 21%. The most striking increase was in cycling, which almost tripled from 4% to 11%. By contrast, the share of workers who walked stayed constant at 7% throughout the period.
