Band 8.0 answer
The table gives the average monthly rainfall, in millimetres, in two cities, Seaport and Highland, across the four quarters of the year.
Overall, the two cities show opposite seasonal patterns: Seaport is wettest at the start of the year and driest in mid-year, while Highland is at its wettest in the middle of the year.
Seaport received 120 mm a month between January and March, the highest figure for either city in the first half of the year. Rainfall then fell to 80 mm in the spring quarter and dropped sharply to only 30 mm between July and September, before recovering to 95 mm in the final quarter.
Highland's pattern was almost the reverse. It was driest at the start of the year, with 35 mm, and the figure rose steadily to 60 mm in the second quarter. It then peaked at 110 mm from July to September, its highest figure of the year, before falling back to 45 mm in the last quarter.
It is notable that, in the third quarter, Highland received more than three times as much rain as Seaport, whereas in the first quarter Seaport's rainfall was more than three times Highland's.
