Band 6.5 answer
Zoos have been popular for hundreds of years, but today many people question whether it is right to keep wild animals in cages. In my opinion, zoos can be useful if they are well run, but they must change.
On the one hand, there are good reasons to dislike zoos. Many animals, such as elephants and big cats, travel long distances in the wild, and a small enclosure can make them stressed. Some animals show unusual behaviour, for example walking in circles, which suggests they are not happy. Furthermore, visitors often treat animals as entertainment instead of as living creatures.
On the other hand, zoos play an important role in protecting species. Some animals are nearly extinct in the wild, and zoos breed them to increase the population. For example, some rare birds have been returned to nature after being born in zoos. Zoos also educate children, who may never see an animal like a tiger in real life, and this can make them care about nature when they grow up.
I think the best solution is to improve zoos instead of closing them. Zoos should have large enclosures that look like the natural home of the animals, and they should focus on rare species rather than on animals that are common. Governments should also check zoos regularly and close those that do not follow the rules.
To sum up, although zoos have problems, they can help to save animals and teach people about nature, so I believe they should stay open under strict conditions.
