General Task 1: Complaint about an online order (Band 6 version)

General Task 1 158 words 1 min read

Task

You ordered a jacket from an online shop, but it arrived damaged. Write a letter to the manager. Explain what happened, say what you have done already, and say what you want the shop to do. Write at least 150 words. Begin your letter as follows: Dear Sir or Madam,

Band 6.0 answer

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complain about a jacket I bought from your website on 10 March. The order number is 48213.

When the parcel arrived two days ago, I opened it and I saw that the zip was broken and there was also a hole in one sleeve. I was very disappointed because I needed the jacket for a trip next week. I sent an email to your customer service on the same day, but nobody replied to me, so I am writing this letter.

I would like you to send me a new jacket as soon as possible, or if you don't have it any more I want my money back. I can send you photos of the damage if you want. Also I think you should check your products before you send them to customers.

I hope you will solve this problem quickly. Thank you for your help.

Yours faithfully,
Kim Lee

Why this scores 6.0

One note for each marking criterion.

Task achievement
All three bullet points are covered and the purpose is clear. The requests are somewhat blunt ('I want my money back', 'you should check').
Coherence and cohesion
Clear paragraphs, but sentences are joined mostly with 'and', 'so' and 'but'. Paragraph two mixes several events.
Lexical resource
Understandable but plain ('very disappointed', 'solve this problem'). The tone slips from formal into informal ('Also I think...').
Grammatical range and accuracy
Good control of simple and some complex structures, with small errors ('I opened it and I saw', 'if you don't have it any more'). To reach 7, use more polite forms ('I would be grateful if you could...').
